Yes, I know. There were at least 17 new films that came out in 2020. Shocking isn’t it! Can you even remember the last time you went to the cinema and what you watched? Was it even good?

I love the cinema and watching all types of movies so when the cinema was back open, I was there watching movies.

Not just at the cinema too. Some films went straight to streaming platforms. You got some for free or you might have to pay a little to watch it online. Still cheaper than paying for your entire family for some movies.

Still, we got a few decent movies out in 2020 and the rest are waiting for us in the new year. But what did come out this year and what were the best films?

OK. This one was a huge blockbuster in the summer, but what a mind job. It’s very long and complicated but what a masterpiece.

It’s a Christopher Nolan special for sure but it’s a lot to get your head around. Like, Robert Patterson can properly act outside a besotted brooding vampire teenager…that threw me.

Wowzers. Pixar went deep on this one. Released on Christmas Day Disney tugged at our heartstrings to show you their version of life after death and the “great before”.

It’s a lot for a “kids movie” and they’re some weird characters in this one. Nothing that would make a get cuddle toy for Disney to merch off for £50 per item. But they do have some funny and likeable characters as always.

Don’t worry, it’s not all jazz as the trailer makes out. It’s more about finding your “spark” and “the meaning of life“. Deep stuff.

I might get some stick for this one but everyone on here know’s how much of a sci-fi buff I am and this was the ONLY good Sci-fi film this year.

Also Twilight costar Kirsten Steward has shocked me. She was actually quite good this year in several films, including this one. I used to find her highly annoying and her acting grates on me, which is no secret. But she failed to make me loath her this year. Bravo.

This film set underwater (shocking), has the action kick off within minutes. It’s got some Deep Blue Sea vibes, minus the sharks but has somethings added instead. No spoilers. Don’t worry it’s not bloody Meg.

Well, what can I say? It’s a bloody masterpiece really isn’t it. It’s an incredible art form to get some of these shots but to get them all in one uncut take. Now that’s just showing off.

The entire film feels like one continuous shot. You feel like you’re actually on the journey with them and makes the war feel even more realistic.

I must say, it has to be one of my favourite war films…ever.

I wasn’t expecting to love this film as much as I did. It’s an incredible thriller and Russell Crowe just nails it. He’s hauntingly scary in this movie which makes it even more intense.

What’s even better is that it’s realistic. The moves and storyline are what your thinking you would do or say. I find it really annoying in a movie when you’re screaming at the screen an obvious decision but it’s like the characters are listening to you. Creepy.

One of my favourite films of the entire year! In a nutshell, it’s about sexual harassment in the workplace…AT FOX NEWS!!!! It’s an incredible TRUE STORY, based around Trump’s election campaign and how 3 brave women took down one of the most powerful (and disgusting) men in history.

I didn’t hear anything about this movie till I saw it while scrolling through Disney+. No trailer, nothing. Which is a damn shame because it’s a great movie.

One thing Disney can do really well is a Sports movie. They did Mighty Ducks, Invincible, Remember the Titans and Cook Runnings….now they have Saftey!

This film shows a young man struggling to keep his scholarship, play football, hides his little brother in his dorm room and looks after him every day. Oh, by the way…it’s a TRUE STORY.

There’s been a few lockdown production films about lockdown itself but this was probably the best. Produced by Action film expert Michael Bay. Yes, the guy who loves a car chase scene and a slow-mo dramatic shot.

This film is set in 2024 as the Covid 19 virus mutated and is now at Covid 23. It’s mostly set in peoples houses but there is one character who gets to roam the quiet streets like from 28 days later.

It’s hauntingly good, great cast (the main guy is really fit) and shows a horrid glimpse into our future if we don’t sort this shit out.

I paid £20 to watch this on Disney+…£20! At the time it was worth it because I was just dying to watch something new but £20!? And to make it worse, it’s now free.

Anyway, the film itself is quite beautiful. It’s authentic, inspiring and filled with action. Yes, there are times it’s quite unbelievable and my sister who doesn’t like films that contain scenes which are unrealistic, absolutely hated this film.

But that’s what Disney is all about. Imagination! Plus, we all love a strong female lead.

I had to include at least one cheesy comedy and this is it. I thought it would be a nice time filler during my lockdown. You know, to pass the time. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how hilarious it was!!

The two female leads have a great friendship and they’re both funny AF. Tiffany Haddish, in particular, had me in stitches, as well as retail assistant Billy Porter.

If you’re looking for a good laugh right now, this is the film for you.

Just Mercy

This is my most recently watched film and I’m annoyed at myself it’s taken me so long to watch it. What an incredible story and a true story too.

This film will shock you, make you angry and make you cry….several times. It’s so emotional from start to finish. And I mean finish, as the last minute of the film they triggered me again and I was right back crying again.

Wonder Woman 1984

It finally came out!? They released something at the cinema!

It might not have scored well but it’s still a good movie. Not as good as the first Wonder Woman and there were times where I thought “this is a bit rubbish”, but it was just nice to watch something new. A new superhero movie too.

There were times I was a bit of an emotional mess again (it doesn’t take much). The actual bad guy was a bit disappointing but Kirsten Wiig was surprisingly good for a superhero movie (till the last 10 minutes).

Yes, I remember the creepy Kevin Bacon film too. But this film goes down a dark murderous path, instead of the disturbingly rapey and pervy one.

This version also has the super intense Elizabeth Moss (from Handmaid’s Tale) and a physio husband to match.

This film will keep you guessing and keep you looking for someone you can’t see. Even when the movie is over…

You’ve got to love Pixar right. How do they keep doing it? This year, we got not one but 2 great Pixar films and this is the second.

Based on a world where magic is real and elves, pixies, ogres, beasts, etc, roam around. But they’ve become all modernized which is really sad.

It’s also based on loss and two kids getting to see their deceased father again for 1 day but messes it up. I think everyone can relate to this movie. It’s filled with heart but lots of action too. A proper Pixar movie.

I love going to the theatre but I had never heard of this musical till it started trending on Twitter. Who is Hamilton?

This broadway production like many others got stopped so they made a film of the show which is viewable on Disney+. What a show!!! Not only was this a top addition to Disney but trended everywhere. It’s also reselling tickets for next year. What a genius idea!

I’m still singing the tunes and the king still makes me chuckle.

Hello, Film of the year!! Yes, this Korean film won the best film at the Oscars. Remember the Oscars? They were in February before everyone went into Lockdown and the world stopped.

Yes, you’ll have to watch it with subtitles but it’s more about the actions of this crazy family that you’ll be hooked with. It’s a great story and worth a watch, even with subtitles!

The Gentlemen

This is my stepdads favourite film of the year, and it’s pretty damn good. It’s a proper British gangster film and yes, I know a lot of people don’t like them but this one has a modern twist.

It’s also got the incredible Matthew McConaughey, King Arthur himself Charlie Hunnam (whos my favourite character in this film) and the hilarious Hugh Grant who makes an excellent arsehole.

There are a few more star-studded characters in the mix, the storyline is a little complex at first but once you get into the swing of it, you’ll be hooked.
