We’re 6 months into the year already! Time flies and so do magic carpets this year. I must say this year is already so much better than last years selection of films. We’ve had a great mix of genres and there still so much more to look forward to.
You can keep up to date with my 2019 film reviews and see how each film fit into my 2019 ranking as and when I watch them. So far I’ve watched 30 films at the cinema! Before the last set of films come out, I wanted to showcase my favourite 10 films this year so far. Let’s see what the best of the bunch…
10 | GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS
Before I get slammed by other film reviewers from around the world, hear me out. Firstly, I wasn’t expecting to like this film either. I went to watch it to get out the house and chill out a bit. I probably wouldn’t have seen it till Netflix but I had the time and I was intrigued.
The story is easy to follow and the characters are likeable but the main thing which blew me away were the monsters. Not just Godzilla but all of them. They’re choreographed beautifully, the CGI and colours are stunning! Honestly it’s worth a watch.
9 | SHAZAM!
Another film I wasn’t expecting to like as much as I did. I honestly thought this was DC Comics last ditch attempt to stay afloat after Batman failed them but this film was shockingly good and really funny.
It was definitely a slow starter and got funnier as the film went on. There was a lot of the best bits in the trailer but some great hidden surprises at the end. A great family superhero film.
8 | FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY
Love it! Love it! Love it! It was just one of those films where I watched the trailer and instantly knew I was going to enjoy it straight away. It’s a proper English film with a few American stars thrown in but they don’t over shadow the main characters.
It’s a hilarious film with a lot of heart and …and it’s based on a real story too!
7 | ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL
I remember watching a special screening of this and was made to watch over an hour of red carpet footage. Not OK. However, the rest of it was great! You’ve got to love James Cameron for bringing us into a whole new world every time he gets his hands on something.
The film itself is right up my street. It’s got a strong female lead, the animation is incredible, it’s action packed and the SciFi world they’ve created is beautifully made. If you like SciFi films, you’ll love this one.
6 | TOY STORY 4
The Toys are back in town! We’re into film 4 of the franchise and probably (hopefully) the last one. I believe films shouldn’t be dragged out…like Alien. Just let it die.
This film brings us a lot of new characters, new locations where you’ll find toys and some old friends come back to the group. It’s fun and has a lot of laughs but I’m done with creepy toys this year. No more please!!
5 | ALADDIN
Aladdin remake? Live action? With no Robin Williams? No, no, no. Those were my initial thoughts. Then I watched it and ate my words. What a beautifully made film. With a film like Toy Story were I didn’t know what was going to happen, I felt it was quite predictable but with Aladdin I know the story so well but it felt like I didn’t know what was going to happen next.
Incredibly directed, the dancing was beautifully done, the singing was fabulous and the actors were well cast. Also, Will Smith…considering Genie was a hard role to step into with little wiggle room for improvement from Robin Williams, I thought he didn’t remarkable well to make his own stamp on it.
Bravo Disney! Best Live action film so far!
4 | GREEN BOOK
Hello film of the year. Yes, it sure was and rightly so. This film won multiple awards including an Oscar from the Academy Awards for best film which won over A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody Black Panther and The Favourite.
It brings back so many memories of the beautiful Deep South for me. Great states with a lot of culture and history. The actors in this film are so raw and bring so much emotion to this incredible story. Fantastic film!
3 | US
Jordan Peele fresh from his success with Get Out brings us another masterpiece with US. It’s creepy, scary, filled with suspense and still has that touch of humor he’s famous for. It deserves one of the top spots of the year and is the only “original” film (that’s not been previous made from comics) from this list.
I cannot wait to see what Peele does next…oh wait I can because I’m still messed up from this film. All the nightmares.
2 | CAPTAIN MARVEL
What a bad ass! I loved this film despite other critics opinions and got slammed in reviews across the internet. This is an empowering film and gives us a strong female Marvel character in their own full length film which we’ve been craving for. I enjoyed the story line, I love the friendship between Marvel and Nick Fury but most of all I loved this character.
Slap bang in my favourite decade…the 90s, Brie Lawson gives us buckets of attitude, humour, quirkiness and personality! She’s likable and she’s a strong female role model. It’s a great film and led us perfectly to End Game. Didn’t like her haircut in EndGame though…just saying.
1 | AVENGERS ENDGAME
Well…it was kind of obvious wasn’t it. Biggest film of the year, record breaking at the box office and it’s still going! One of the biggest and best casts in cinema history join together to end a 10 year in the making masterpiece.
Personally, I liked Infinity War better…just to add some controversy to it but I loved battle scene in this last movie. I didn’t know where to look. All my favourite characters all joining up to fight together. Let’s not forget one of the biggest, shocking and most emotional deaths of a beloved character I’ve ever seen. Love you 3000!
…and we still have Spiderman: Far from Home and many others to come! What a year 2019 is proving to be.
