Immediately after my first Slimming World meeting, after listening to people talking about Food and Syns for about an hour, I went home and probably scoffed about half a box of chocolates. I didn’t Syn them either.
I knew from the get go this whole process was going to be hard. I even said several times to my colleagues and housemates…
“There’s no way I can do this. I don’t get it. I’ll go next week but that’s it.”
I used to play Field Hockey till last year and was regularly training or playing 4 times a week. After an accident on the field last year, I hurt my neck and top of my spine so I quit hockey but also limited my physical activity for about 6 months. I went up 2 dress sizes and I lost all my confidence with it.
I know how to lose weight and what to do at the gym but I was lacking motivation to go and didn’t feel confident about my body at all, especially in my gym clothes. I used to be a very active person and I know I can lose the most weight when I’m doing physical activity.
My diet has been pretty awful most my life but I maintained a decent weight for years mainly by being active.
I joined Slimming World not just to lose weight, but to learn how to eat better too. I also wanted to become more motivated. Not just by getting my butt back to the gym but by learning to cook and knowing what is actually in my meals.
BIGGEST CHANGES TO MY LIFE AND DIET
GYM 3 TIMES A WEEK
Before Slimming World, I was struggling to go once a week. This week, I’ve done 2 gym sessions and a HIIT class. Honestly, the HIIT class ruined me. I’m still sore but it was only a 30 minute slot, it makes me sweat in minutes and it burns those Calories off.
3 MEALS A DAY
I was having 3 meals a day before but my breakfast and lunch didn’t really have much gap between them. This week, I’ve been eating better and at the right times. It makes me look forward to meals and makes me feel fuller.
For the last few days, I’ve been looking at my meals and swapping food to something with less Syns. This was hard as I don’t like change.
However, I made some decent swaps for bread, potatoes, snacks, cheese, bacon and wraps. Getting these Syns low enough in my meals so I can have a well earned dessert!
Stopping snacking at work has been horrendous. My treat draw is empty and all I want is chocolate. I was so miserable the other day my colleague (literally) threw a packet of crisps at me. I took it as a sign and happily consumed them.
Not only did I used to snack at work but I was having a lot of treats after work too. I’m a chocoholic and there’s no stopping me. There’s no way I can go cold turkey so I’m trying to reduce the amount I eat each day.
If I could have chocolate with every meal I would. Watching Bake off and only allowing myself one cake is hard.
BIGGEST SHOCKS I FOUND IN MY FIRST WEEK AT SLIMMING WORLD
The worst part of the meeting was being weighed. I think everyone thinks like this to be honest. I couldn’t believe how much I weighed. This is the biggest I’ve ever been.
I don’t want to be skinny. Hell no. When I was ill a few years ago, I used to be a size 6 and I hated it. I was quite happy with my curves but now I’m a little over what I should be.
The dreaded BMI says I’m close to being overweight. I think that’s a little over the top to be honest. I’m not fat. I’m just not happy with my weight and I want to feel a little more body confident.
COUNTING MY SYNS
For the first two days of my week, I had already planned my meals. I didn’t count the Syns till afterwards and I was shocked by how badly I was eating. Slightly appalled with myself.
One day I had nearly 40 Syns and we’re only allowed 15 Syns a day on Slimming World. I had a bit of a panic and wondered how on earth I was going to get this down. Did a few swaps and cut backs to get myself under 15. Just like doing my bills.
IT’S BAD FOR ME???
One of the “healthiest” things I eat in a day is soup. One of your 5 a day. However, on Slimming World, a can of soup is classed as 10 syns!? That’s more than my favourite chocolate or an ice cream! I don’t quite understand it to be honest but I’m not having tinned soup anymore.
TIRED ALL THE TIME
I’m so tired. I love sleep. Ask my family. I love it. However, since I cut down on my sugar intake and started going to the gym more I feel like I’m really struggling. I’ve been having naps and struggling to sleep through the night because of the cravings.
I’ve got OCD and Asperger’s so I really struggle changing and adding anything to my routine. Changing my diet and going the gym more was very difficult. I want to try some new food but this again is quite difficult.
I find it hard consuming foods with certain textures. Anything too slimy or crunchy is basically out the window which makes eating fruit and veg difficult.
WHAT I’M TRYING NEXT WEEK
BRINGING A FRIEND
I’m going to give Slimming World another week to see my progress and I’m bringing a friend. Hopefully, the support might help us both.
STICKING TO THE ROUTINE
Now I’ve got all this new stuff in my routine, it’s a little easier to stick to it. I just need to keep it up.
PLANNING AND PREPARING MEALS
I seriously need to start planning my meals. Mostly for my lunches at work. That’s where I’m struggling the most because the vending machine calls my name when I’m hungry or there’s the cheeky corner shop. This ends now.
10 syns for Soup?….see ya!
My Slimming World Meetings are on Monday’s so keep an eye on my Social Media for Progress reports and see if I lose weight. If I don’t lose weight this week…I’ll be fuming.
