On Friday 1st December, I started run up to Christmas by watching “The Holiday” which is one of my favourite Christmas films. I didn’t watch it in the comfort of my own home, snuggled up on the sofa with a blanket and hot chocolate. Instead, I broke tradition by going to “Backyard Cinema” which is something I’ve wanted to do for such a long time.
Backyard Cinemas is a unique cinema experience in London. Every couple of months they kit out a venue to a particular theme and schedule great films to fit the theme. For example, in the Summer it was a beach theme and showcased films such as “Baywatch”, “Miami Vice” and “Clueless”.
For the next few months, they are going for a Christmas vibe and have tones of amazing Holiday picks to chose from which include “Love Actually”, “Home Alone” and “Elf”. They also have 2 magical venues so you have double the chances to enjoy this Christmas set up. The Snow Kingdom which is at Mercato Metropolitano in Borough and The Winter Night Garden at Winterville in Clapham Common.
I went to The Winter Night Garden which was absolutely stunning. The entrance is based around the magical movie “Narnia”, where you enter the venue through a Wardrobe. You walk through a garden of lights before joining the rest of the guest in the main cinema room.
The cinema room itself was decorated like you had walked into festive lodge. Warm and cosy. There are two different kinds of seats available. Either a bean bag which are towards the front of the cinema or couches which seat 4 people and fill up most of the room. There are pillows and blankets you can grab to get yourself extra snug. They also have their own bar where you can not only purchase drinks and cinema food but mince pies too. You won’t miss a moment of your favourite Christmas movie if you want to grab a snack mid film.
Once you’ve been seated with your snacks, drinks and blankets ready…the film begins. But not before the trailers. This is my favourite part. I love trailers before any film but these were extra special and a very nice touch. They’re not your average coming soon trailers. They’re old christmas videos. In black and white. Vintage. Perfect.
What an amazing experience. I love Unique Cinema experiences and this is certainly one of them. This is event is perfect for first dates, families or going with your friends. A great evening out for everyone. I can’t wait to go again.
