You’ve come to the right place to figure out which scary movie to watch this Halloween. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Horror films! I’ve put together a list of all my favourite horror films which I think will seriously give you the creeps this Halloween. You won’t find any family friendly movies in this list. Sorry Caspar!
One of my favourite teen slasher movies, EVER! I love this film. It’s got a great leading actress, a great mystery to unfold and a psycho killer who’s disguise is still terrifying today.
“Now Sid, don’t you blame the movies. Movies don’t create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!”
Ah Carrie. Poor, poor Carrie. If you haven’t seen this movie then this is the one you need to see. Not the new one!? The 1976 version which is a true classic.
“It was bad, Mama. They laughed at me. Hold me, Mama. Please hold me.”
This 2016 horror is more of a Mystery/Thriller than a horror movie but this will still give you the creeps. Expect a lot of laughs too, which I wasn’t expecting. A great film to watch this Halloween if your don’t really into too much gore.
“This bitch is crazy. Bitch is crazy.”
I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER
Obviously, I’m a sucker for 90’s horror and I’m not ashamed to say it. This movie also includes one of the 90’s couple royalty with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr and there still together!? Can’t go wrong with a cheesy Murder/Mystery with a fisherman, right?
“We made a pact and we’re keeping it.”
This movie is a lot scarier now I live in London. I’ll never be able to ride the tube without thinking of this movie again and I definitely won’t be taking a cheeky nap in the underground.
“Excuse me, I fell asleep on the platform”
The Halloween classic. It’s in the name. You can’t go wrong with the original of all horror films if your struggling to chose anything this Halloween. Vintage.
“Was that the Boogeyman?”
It’s very rare the a sequel can live up to the original horror movie and this one does just that. The Conjuring 1 and 2 are equally as terrifying. If you wanted to pick just 1 then obviously go with the 1st but maybe make room for the 2nd one too.
“There is something horrible happening in my house.”
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
This is one of the only horror movie my mum strictly forbade me to watch when I was kid. Obviously, I ignored her advise…wish I didn’t and I don’t say that very often. You’ll have nightmares for days…no puns intended. I’m serious.
“Whatever you do… don’t fall asleep.”
THE SIXTH SENSE
I’m a huge fan of M.Night’s films and this is his ultimate horror flick that will give you the willies. Dead people who only a child can see. That’s not a sense I would appreciate. Predicting lottery numbers. Now, there a gift I would appreciate.
“I see dead people.”
What a great horror film idea. Totally American and I was totally fascinated. One night a year where murder is legalised. Great idea…for a film. Not real life. Let’s hope this film doesn’t give Trump any ideas.
“Just remember all the good the purge does.”
This one is super creepy film. It’s a very modern day horror about a fatal curse which is passed like an STI. There’s a great safe sex promo. This turns into a creepy ghostly stalker which follows it’s victims constantly at a slow pace. If it catches you, you die…Phantom assassination!
“It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you.”
I found this movie on Netflix. It’s so good! It’s a great thriller horror about a deaf woman who lives in the middle of no where and has to defend herself again a mysterious stranger who is on a killing spree in her remote neighbourhood. The best part about this film is that she obviously can’t hear him and doesn’t realise he’s there!
“You know what, I think you’re holding out on me. I bet if I hit the right spot… I can make you scream”
A classic. You really can’t go wrong with one of the original horror movies. Possession movies really freak me out but they are some of the best movies when it comes to Halloween.
“What a wonderful day for an exorcism!”
I freaking love this movie. I still find it scary. Don’t want the sequels, their really bad and done to death but the original is truly terrifying worthy. Eliza Dushku stars in this one and gets stuck in the woods with her friends. A bunch of mutilated cannibals start hunting them and it goes from there. Great film!
“We are never going into the woods again!”
28 DAYS LATER
Danny Boyle is a truly brilliant British Director. This is one of his defining films. Only Danny Boyle could close down parts of London to make one of the busiest cities in the world look like a deserted ghost town. Would have been a nightmare getting to work that day though. One of the best Zombie films of our generation.
“More infected will be coming. They always do.”
HERE’S JOHNNY!! Oh wait…what quote should I use now? Not thought this through. Anyway, this is Jack Nicholson defining role and it’s time you see why! Watch out for the little girls in the hallway *covers eyes*
“Come play with us Danny. Forever…..and ever……and ever.”
If you don’t like small spaces, the dark or being trapped then this one will really freak you out. It’s a great British film which will leave you totally claustrophobic. I still can’t get through the whole thing without covering my eyes.
“I’m an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider.”
AS ABOVE SO BELOW
This film is totally cheesy in places but I absolutely love it. Another film about small spaces but set in the catacombs under Paris in France. There treasure hunters looking for the Philosophers Stone. No, Harry, Ron or Hermione in sight though.
“The only way out is down.”
Creepy children alert. Nothing is scarier for me than film with possessed children. This one has two! Technically, there not possessed but they are haunted by a ghostly figure of woman who takes them under her wing when their father tries to kill them in the Forrest. That’s bad parenting right there.
“Daddy! There’s a woman outside… She’s not touching the floor!”
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
I remember watching this film when I was younger. It has no CGI and is totally built on suspense. It was the first horror film were it’s all filmed from the actors perspective too which makes the film feel more real.
“I gave you BACK the map, Heather.”
One of the best horror movie ending twist EVER!!! It’s a shame they had to ruin this film by creating so many sequels as the movie is so original and creative. A great thriller movie and that ending…WOW!
“I want to play a game.”
This film goes down the lines of Blair Witch but in the comfort of their own hone, self filming the whole film from their prospective. Again, this film did so well that it’s now been done to death with sequels but the original is still amazing. The build to the demon haunting is amazing. One thing to take from this film is to…listen to your girlfriend!?
“I feel it. I feel it breathing on me.”
Creepy dead kid, horses, well, a VCR and a TV set…that pretty much sums this one up.
“Daddy loves the horses. He wants me to go away.”
Guess what this film is about? Creepy house filled with ghosts. Just like it says on the tin. No games. Lots of screaming.
“Hey Mom! When it rots can we dig up the bones?”
This film is a little slow on the uptake. It’s about a crime writer who is looking for a new story and moves his family into the victims old house. He finds box of tapes with murders on them, each more tragic than the last. A film about a film.
“I think I’ll do some grocery shopping. I figured I’d get the lay of the land – have a nice morning with your murder victims!”
Jeepers Creepers, where’d ya get those peepers? Jeepers Creepers, where’d ya get those eyes? That song will haunt me. Two college kids find a shocking discovery in the basement of an old church but end up in a race for their own lives.
“Every 23rd Spring, for 23 days, it gets to… eat.”
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE
Gross, gross, gross! Whoever thought of this movie has a sick mind. Super scary, so gross!
“Feed her! Feed her!”
This is deep space Sci-Fi horror. If you’ve not seen it, I don’t know how you’ve avoided it for so long? It’s my number 1 Alien movie…obviously. Ripley also led the way for great, strong, female leads in horror movies. Not your big breasted, long haired, bimbo, running away screaming half the movie. She’s the ultimate bad ass!
“Bones are bent outward, like he exploded from inside.”
This film is one of the main reasons why I had anxiety about hostels for years and makes travelling Europe look more dangerous than it actually is. It’s like Taken, but no super dad like Liam Neeson to save you.
“No one is paying me. In fact, I’m the one paying THEM!”
THE HILLS HAVE EYES
When you think a family holiday couldn’t get any worse, you get attacked by deformed, inbred, mutant, cannibals. Nightmare. Seriously, scary though!
“Give me back my baby!”
FRIDAY THE 13TH
The beginning of a multi million dollar franchise. If you’ve ever been to camp this film will scary you silly. I’m an ex camp counsellor and I am so glad I didn’t watch this film till after or I wouldn’t have spelt a wink.
“You’re doomed! You’re all doomed!”
I saw this movie for the first time on Netflix. Is it the best film on this list, definitely not but it has some great scary moments. It’s about a killer virus that turns a small town rather loopy. It’s an easy watch.
“Do you wanna give up? You wanna sit here and die, tell me, and I will sit here and die with you.”
The Grudge original was made 2 years prior to the American remake. The American movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar which you think would be the perfect choice with her Buffy background this really isn’t the movie for her. The Grudge is terrifying though which makes up for the bad acting.
“There is something evil there.”
The Hitchcock classic. This Slasher/Thriller is a true horror film which every director has to live up. It a true master piece. If your not into the art farty classics then dodge this one but it’s a film you have to tick of your movie bucket list.
“Mother! Oh God, mother! Blood! Blood!”
SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
This Crime/Drama is another unmissable movie. It’s about a kidnapper with a gory twist. FBI agent Clarice has to interview Hannibal Lecter to help get a physiological perspective to help her solve the mystery. It’s a truly brilliant pairing with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.
“Well, Clarice – have the lambs stopped screaming?”
The new kid on the block…again. Yes, another remake but it’s the horror movie everyone is talking about. If you don’t want to buy or rent any of the option above, then get down to your local cinema and watch IT this Halloween.
“Oh! Without your boat? You don’t wanna lose it Georgie. Bill’s gonna kill you! Here. Take it.”
