I was invited to the media screening of Nocturnal Animals in Leicester Square last week. Before I start this review, I had very minimal knowledge on what the film was about before I went into the film. I obviously watched the trailer before I went and still couldn’t quite grasp what the film was actually about. I also watched Amy Adams interview on the Graham Norton Show and still that didn’t prepare me for what I was about to watch.

This film is outstanding. It has a lasting effect on you afterwards, where I was still trying to understand and analyse what I just watched. Speaking to other journalists and bloggers after they were still in shock about what we just saw. It is a beautiful film but I can honestly say no one was prepared for it and giving us free wine beforehand was a great move by the production company! I highly recommend a glass of wine…you’ll need it!

So what is it about? It’s a story within a story. It’s about a woman who receives a manuscript written by her ex-husband. The film has 3 different sections. The woman reading the book in present day and what her life is like right now. The story line of the manuscript. Then lastly the flashbacks to her relationship with her ex-husband and why they are no longer together. The editing of these sections is very well done intertwining the stories.

The opening of this film is one of the weirdest things I have ever seen…but memorising at the same! I still can’t get this image out of my head! Within 20 minutes, I was completely hooked! The film is totally arty so if you don’t like films then you might not enjoy it. However, the main story which is the contents of the book is a crime thriller which you will enjoy! I wouldn’t be surprised if this film wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe or an Academy Award. It is a brilliant piece of storytelling. The editing is great too but the acting from Amy Adams and especially Jake Gyllenhaal, which is some of his best work. He was truly outstanding! I ‘m slightly biast as he will be my future husband…

I rate Nocturnal Animals 9/10

Nocturnal Animals is released in cinemas on Friday 4th November!

I just saw the movie. What a strange but very gripping film.

Glad you like it Natasha; I found it very engaging. The photography is stunning and the multiple story layers intertwine brilliantly to produce a gripping noir-style sexually transgressive pycho thriller. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
